VELscope Oral Cancer Screening
Every hour of every day in America someone dies of Oral Cancer. Oral Cancer is the 6th most common form of cancer in North America. The 5 year survival rate is only 50%, accounting for 8000 deaths each year. Oral Cancer risk factors include tobacco use, frequent and/or excessive alcohol consumption, a compromised immune system, past history of cancer, and the presence of the HPV virus. Recently however 25% of all newly diagnosed cases have been in patients under the age of 40 with none of the known risk factors.
Oral Cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved in the last 50 years. This is primarily due to the fact that during this time we have not changed the way we screen for this disease (a visual and manual examination if the oral cavity, head and neck) Here at Able Dental Group we have recently acquired an advanced tool for early detection of this severe and difficult to diagnose form of Cancer called the VELscope. And we use it free of charge to you at every scheduled check-up!
The VELscope handpiece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, which causes the tissues present to fluoresce. The clinician is then able to immediately view the different responses to differentiate between healthy and abnormal tissues.
Typically, healthy tissue appears as a bright apple-green glow while suspicious regions are identified by a loss of fluorescence, which thus appears dark. There is no pain or discomfort associated with the use of the VELscope, and it takes very little time.
Just another way that we are safeguarding the health of our patients. Come in for your Oral Cancer Screening today!
