Able Dental Candy Buy Back

Pound for pound, it’s the sweetest deal you’ll find this month.

Able Dental is offering its fifth-annual Halloween candy buy-back, an opportunity for southern Alberta trick-or-treaters to turn all that sugar into cash.

Whether you collected your stash door to door, or find you’ve got leftovers from your Halloween Night treat tray, you can bring it all to Able Dental, 511 Fifth St. S. between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 1. Able will swap you $1 for every pound you bring in.

“When we started the candy buy-back program, we had no idea it would be as successful as it’s become,” says Connie Hansen, Able Dental Public Relations Manager. “We’ve heard from grateful parents and kids, too, many of whom don’t even take the money.”

There’s a reason for the children’s generosity. The candy collected, some 800 pounds last year, will be send abroad in Christmas packages for Canadian troops, wherever they happen to be serving.

Cheryl Kyllo, manager of the northside UPS outlet, donates the shipping costs and sorts and packs all the candy.

“We love being involved in Able Dental’s candy buy-back program,” says Kyllo. “It’s a super community effort.”

The biggest kick for kids is providing sweet-toothed Canadian soldiers with holiday joy.

“One of my favourite jobs is visiting the classroom and presenting the winner with their prize,” says Hansen. “The whole class goes crazy with excitement.”

If parting ways with hard-won Halloween treats seems a bit of a challenge, Hansen has a suggestion.

“Kids don’t even have to give up all their candy,” says Hansen. “They can sort out the stuff they don’t care for and bring it into Able Dental. We have a scale to weigh their donations, and we always round up.”
