How to care for your dentures

Able Dental - Monday, June 22, 2015

Today's dentures are more comfortable to wear than ever before, but, without proper care, your dentures or partial dentures can still cause problems such as irritation and infection. Thankfully, these issues are easily avoided with some routine denture care. You can easily ensure good oral health by cleaning, storing, and handling your dentures properly. Here are some handy tips to help you do just that:

- Clean your dentures every day

Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be cleaned and brushed daily. Your dentures can be brushed with a soft-bristled toothbrush that is specifically designed for dentures, and can be cleaned with mild hand or dishwashing soap. Make sure that you steer clear of using regular toothpastes and household cleaners, as both are often abrasive and can create scratches on the surface of your dentures where food might later get stuck.

- Store your dentures correctly when not wearing them

Dentures should never be worn while you sleep, and must be kept moist when they are not being worn. Most dentures can be kept in a glass of special denture solution, but dentures with metal clasps should only be soaked in water. Make sure that you talk to a dentist if you have any questions about how to properly store your specific dentures.

- Handle your dentures with care

Dentures should always be handled with care, as they can easily break if they are dropped. While brushing your dentures it is a good idea to hold them either over a soft towel or a sink filled with water.

- Never try to adjust your dentures on your own

The shape of your mouth and gums may change over time, and your dentures might not fit as well as they once did. If this happens to you, then it is important not to try making any adjustments yourself.
