Assessing Invisalign® Pros and Cons

Invisalign is a popular way to align and straighten your teeth and it has been proven effective for adults and teens alike. Unlike traditional braces that rely on metal wires and brackets to straighten your teeth, Invisalign® moves your teeth using a series of custom-made clear retainers. Before getting this type of dental solution, it is best that you consider the pros and cons.

Invisalign® Advantages and Disadvantages to Consider

Here are a few things you may want to consider before opting for Invisalign®:

  • Con: There are more attachments than you may realize. There are attachments you may need that go along with your Invisalign® system, including enamel-coloured ridges temporarily bonded to your natural teeth and other attachments that click into the aligners to help move your teeth more effectively. The number of attachments you need will depend on your teeth, but can range from just a few to a dozen.
  • Pro: You can remove trays when necessary. If you are eating or need to remove trays, you can. Unlike metal braces that must be removed by a professional, Invisalign® can be taken out when you want.
  • Con: You must wear these for 22 hours. While they are more convenient, you still need to wear your retainers for a minimum of 22 hours per day, basically only removing them to eat.
  • Pro: They are safer than metal braces. Metal braces are known for discomfort in your teeth and gums. Invisalign® not promote demineralization and tooth decay like metal braces can.
  • Con: They may stain easily. The aligners can stain when you drink wine or coffee. Also, you must stick to lukewarm or cold drinks when wearing the trays.
  • Pro: They do not affect your speech and they are comfortable to wear. Invisalign®, unlike their metal counterpart, is much more comfortable to wear. They also do not affect a person’s speech or daily lifestyle as much as metal braces.
