Sleep Dentistry

The sights and sounds of a dental office don’t quite measure up to the thrills of, say, Christmas morning. For many, cleaning the oven presents a more enjoyable experience than visiting a dentist. There's no shame in admitting to a little DA (dental anxiety). "Just put me to sleep," is a common refrain for those for whom the whirr of a dentist’s drill conjures up a medieval torture chamber.

Some Able Dental clinics offer sedation dentistry, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation or IV sedation to lower your anxiety. Speak with your Able dentist to determine the best option for you.

Common choices include:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a mild sedative administered through a nose hood throughout your procedure; nitrous oxide elevates your mood, relieves anxiety and reduces pain; side effects are minimal.
  • Intravenous sedation gives many patients a sense of having slept through their visit; used for shorter procedures, IV sedation is injected into your bloodstream and results are immediate; if you choose IV sedation, you will require a friend to drive you home.
  • Oral conscious sedation, taken before your appointment, dulls your senses, leaving you with little or no memory of the procedure. Several pharmaceuticals are available to your Able dentist for this type of sedation, most from the benzodiazepine family; they include Valium, Halcion, Ativan and Versed; your dentist will select the most appropriate for your procedure.
  • General anesthetic is the same used in a hospital for appendectomies, etc.

If you have any questions or concerns about sedation, please ask your dentist or to book an appointment, please call our toll free line at 1-800-552-8053.
