Prevention can also be strengthened with a sealant, a thin plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of deep grooves in your teeth. A majority of decay takes hold here, because the grooves make brushing and flossing difficult. Sealants, which can last for years, create a smooth surface for ease of cleaning.
Besides your own teeth, sealants should be considered for:
- Younger children if their baby teeth have deep grooves or depressions or when their first permanent back teeth come in.
- Older children during the cavity-prone years up to 16.
Your Able dentist/hygienist will thoroughly clean each tooth and apply a bonding material to the enamel before painting on the sealant, which will harden on its own or be dried with a curing light.
